Insomnia Melatonin Dosage

For the last several mos. I have had insomnia problems. Over the last month, I have started taking Melatonin?
I started out with .3 mg and now take 40mg each night. It has helped immensely! Is it safe for me to continue this dosage? I have slept better in the past few nights than I have in the past several yrs on prescription sleep medicines.
I was on Ambien for awhile and experianced sleep walking and over eating. So discontinued. I have not had any bad side effects from Melatonin, just increased alertness the next day, and finally not waking up throughout the night.
40 mg sounds high. You might see if there is some underlying cause which requires you to take such a high amount.
You could try supplements like GABA, L-(found in green tea), Magnesium, and Vitamin D. Changes in your diet include common sense stuff like making sure you eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. Drinking bottled water might be another positive alternative as fluoride can have negative effects on you when too much is consumed.
One other alternative is to look into full spectrum lighting. There are products that simulate natural lighting and that is thought to help regulate your circadian rhythm. So you could replace your indoor lights and then at the same time try and get outside more. It doesn’t matter if it is winter it is better to get some regular sunlight even if it is a cold winter day. Sunlight is the key.
